Five video ads, one masterclass

Five angles for therapists, each with three hooks to test and a body Kelly can read straight to camera. Every one sends people to the same free live masterclass.

  • The Private Pay Masterclass
  • Tue · Oct 27 · 7PM ET
  • 45 to 75 sec each

Every script below was checked against the same 12-point checklist before it went on this page. An ad that misses any point doesn't run.

  1. Hook lands in the first 3 seconds
  2. Calls out therapists by name
  3. Names a real pain in their words
  4. A reframe or new belief
  5. Names the mechanism: reflective listening, pointed at Instagram
  6. Proof, verified numbers only
  7. A specific promise
  8. Emotion (frustration, dread, relief, hope)
  9. Pre-handles an objection
  10. Speaker credibility (LCSW, MBA, 1,000+ students)
  11. One CTA: register for Tuesday, Oct 27
  12. Sounds like a real person talking

Zero clients for three months

Origin / transformation

For: therapists who tried Instagram, got nothing, and decided it doesn't work for them

Hooks (test all three)
  • Hook Apain

I posted on Instagram for three months as a therapist and got exactly zero clients, and then one small change filled my caseload.

  • Hook Bcuriosity

Eight months after my very first Instagram post, I had a full caseload of private-pay clients at $250 a session, and it wasn't because I went viral.

  • Hook Cidentity

If you're a therapist who posts helpful tips on Instagram and gets likes from other therapists but never an inquiry, this is for you.

Body (about 60 sec)
On screenKelly to camera, natural light. Lower third: Kelly McKenna, LCSW, MBA · Anxiety therapist.

I'm Kelly, I'm an anxiety therapist in Miami, and in October 2020 I started posting on Instagram to find clients.

For three months I posted tips. Five coping skills, the signs of burnout, all very helpful. And nobody reached out. Not one person.

B-rollScroll through her real Reels on @sitwithkelly, then a DM notification slides in: Are you taking new clients?

Then I changed one thing. I stopped posting tips and started saying what my ideal client was thinking, the stuff she'd never say out loud. It's the same reflective listening I use in every session.

In January I got my first private-pay client from Instagram. By June my caseload was full, all private pay, at $250 a session, and I made $250,000 my first full year.

I'm teaching exactly how in a free live masterclass for therapists. And no, you don't have to dance or become an influencer to do it.

34 sessions or 15

The math

For: insurance-panel and group-practice therapists who are exhausted by their caseload

Hooks (test all three)
  • Hook Acontrast

Thirty-four sessions a week at insurance rates pays less than fifteen sessions at private pay, and almost no one in grad school did that math for us.

  • Hook Bpain

If you need thirty-plus clients a week to make a decent living as a therapist, your caseload isn't the problem, your rate is.

  • Hook Ccuriosity

Here's the number that finally made me brave enough to leave insurance panels, and it took me about ten seconds on a calculator.

Body (about 60 sec)

Quick math, therapists. Thirty-four sessions a week at ninety dollars from insurance is about three thousand and sixty dollars.

GraphicTwo bars animate in: 34 sessions × $90 = $3,060 vs 15 sessions × $250 = $3,750. The second bar is taller.

Fifteen sessions at two hundred and fifty, private pay, is three thousand seven hundred and fifty. More money, less than half the sessions, and your evenings back.

I'm Kelly McKenna. I'm a licensed therapist, I went fully private pay in 2021, and I've taught more than a thousand therapists to do the same inside the Private Practice Academy.

My student Caitlin was making forty-five dollars a session at an insurance group practice. Now she charges two hundred to two-fifty, and she kept most of her caseload when she left the panels.

In my free masterclass I'll show you how to get off insurance panels and charge $200 or more a session, without losing the clients you love.

Do you take my insurance?

The intro call

For: therapists who get inquiries but lose them when they say their fee

Hooks (test all three)
  • Hook Apain

If your intro calls go cold the second you say your fee, I want to give you the one sentence I say when someone asks if I take their insurance.

  • Hook Bidentity

Therapists, if your voice goes up an octave every time you say your fee out loud, I promise you're not the only one.

  • Hook Ccontrarian

When someone asks if you take her insurance, that's not a no, and treating it like one is costing therapists thousands of dollars a year.

Body (about 60 sec)
On screenKelly at a café table, warm and direct, like she's telling a friend.

You get the inquiry. The intro call's going great. And then she asks, do you take my insurance? And you feel the whole call go cold.

Here's what I say. I'm out of network, so you'd pay me directly and I'll give you a superbill every month. A lot of my clients submit it and get part of it back. Want me to walk you through how that works?

It turns the scary question into a helpful one. She's not saying no, she just doesn't know how out-of-network works yet.

ScreenshotA real DM from a student: btw that client signed on and is paying premium!! Thank you!

I'm Kelly McKenna, LCSW, MBA. I've taught more than a thousand therapists, and my whole private-pay practice runs on intro calls like this. In my free masterclass I'll walk you through the full fifteen-minute call, from the first question to saying your fee once and then letting her answer.

You already know how to market

Anti-guru contrarian

For: therapists who think marketing is salesy and feel cringe promoting themselves

Hooks (test all three)
  • Hook Acontrarian

Therapists, you don't need a marketing course, because the best marketing skill on the planet is one you already use in every single session.

  • Hook Bidentity

If promoting yourself on Instagram makes you cringe, that's probably because someone taught you marketing means selling, and it doesn't.

  • Hook Ccuriosity

Marketing, at its core, is reflective listening, and once I realized that, my caseload filled up with private-pay clients.

Body (about 60 sec)

Most therapists think marketing means selling yourself. Bragging, being salesy, posting your face with a big promise. So we avoid it.

But marketing, at its core, is reflective listening.

B-rollHer real Reel, therapists after an 8-session day, plays muted while she talks.

In session, your client says something, you reflect it back, and she feels understood. On Instagram you do the exact same thing, you just reflect what your ideal client is thinking before she's ever met you.

When she hears you say it better than she could, she thinks, I need her to be my therapist. That's who books at your full fee.

I'm Kelly McKenna, LCSW, MBA. I filled my practice this way and I've taught more than a thousand therapists to do it. In my free masterclass I'll show you the three-part formula I use for every Reel, with an example you can film tomorrow morning.

Pre-licensed and already full

Segment: early-career

For: grad students, associates and pre-licensed therapists who think private pay is years away

Hooks (test all three)
  • Hook Aidentity

If you're a pre-licensed therapist who thinks private pay is years away, Rachel filled her caseload with cash-pay clients before she was even fully licensed.

  • Hook Bcuriosity

One of my students started her therapy Instagram in her last semester of grad school, and filled her caseload with cash-pay clients as a pre-licensed therapist.

  • Hook Cpain

Grad school taught you to be a great clinician and taught you nothing about getting clients, and that's not your fault.

Body (about 60 sec)
ClipA few seconds from Kelly's podcast conversation with Rachel Sleeper, captioned.

Rachel started her therapy Instagram in her last semester of grad school.

She joined my Private Practice Academy while she was still in school, and she filled her caseload with cash-pay clients as a pre-licensed therapist.

You don't have to wait ten years and burn out at an agency first. You need a niche, content that makes the right person feel understood, and an intro call you're not scared of.

I'm Kelly McKenna, LCSW, MBA. I built my own private-pay practice from Instagram starting with zero followers, and I've taught more than a thousand therapists since.

In my free masterclass I'll show you how to write Reels with the reflective listening you already use in session, so the right clients find you early.
